Healthy Shop Garden – June Week 1

DSCF4527 DSCF4526 DSCF4525 DSCF4524 DSCF4523As many of you will already know, here at Bobby’s healthy shop our profits are donated to KICT (Kids Integrated Cancer Treatment) As well as being able to help the children out with valuable financial support, we also have a large organic walled garden used to grow fresh fruit and vegetables. This helps us to provide families with the healthy produce needed to improve their child’s nutrition and life style.

Absolutely no chemicals are used, not even slug pellets and all the water comes straight from our local spring meaning no nasty tap water and all the nasty chlorine and chemicals it can contain. You would be very surprised at the number of things that can be sprayed or added to plants while being still regarded as ‘organic’. We firmly believe in a fully holistic approach to growing food to such an extent that we now use nematode worms as our natural form of pest control. “nematode worms, are environmentally friendly natural parasites of insects pests but do not harm plants or other animals”.

It’s now the first week in June and the garden is in full bloom. Our team of gardeners have been working non stop making sure everything was dug and planted in time for us to have a bumper crop. Since last year we have bought and erected  three secondhand polytunnels, ‘good old Ebay’. This has enabled us to look in to growing even more great varieties of fruit and vegetables.

What things are we growing?

Currently in the ground we have

  • Potatoes
  • Cabbages
  • Beetroot
  • Onions
  • Lettuce
  • Garlic
  • Leeks
  • Beans (broad and runner)
  • Peas
  • Swede
  • Tomatoes
  • Sweat peppers
  • Basil / mint / chives & the list goes on

What’s ready this month?

Unfortunately it’s still early in the year and there still isn’t a whole lot ready for the pot just yet, we have been eating some of the fresh romaine lettuce that also works great for juicing. We also have a great supply of salad onions and chives that are a great accompaniment to any salad. (Try adding apple cider vinegar for a great healthy dressing)

Once we have harvested our produce it is sent out to the family’s we are helping the very same day meaning they receive the food just hours after its been picked. We are still able to help more people with our fresh produce scheme so if you have or know a family with a child currently receiving or recovering from cancer treatment please contact us at info@kict.info for more details.

Our work with KICT often involves families come down to stay with us here at our headquarters in sunny Devon, during their stay we spend time talking about the importance of nutrition and showing how we cook fresh, healthy food from scratch. Although a great opportunity some times families are not in a position to make it down to see us. Due to this in the coming months we will be releasing a series of video cooking tutorials made here at Bobby’s healthy shop HQ showing great recipes, cooking tips & ideas. So stay tuned!
